New Bills Bans Assault Weapons and Limiting Handgun Purchases In late February 2008, the Illinois House Executive Committee recommended passage of two bills – one that bans semi-automatic assault weapons and .50-caliber military grade rifles and another that would limit handgun purchases to one per month, according to a City Hall press release that month. HB 4393 bill prohibits multiple sales of handguns to an individual within a 30-day period, also creates the offense of unlawful acquisition of handguns. “The Mayor also is pushing for state legislation to license handgun dealers at the state level and to require all private sales of handguns to undergo a background check by the Illinois State Police prior to sale,” according to the press release. The bills were sponsored separately by Rep. Edward Acevedo and Rep. Louis Arroyo both of Chicago. |
