Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services Launches 2008 Summer Nutrition Program This summer, the Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services will provide breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks to an expected 700,000 disadvantaged youth up to age 18, "though meal options vary by site," according to their June 24, 2008 press release. The meals, which they said have met USDA nutrition guidelines, will be served to the young people through a network of delegate agencies, such as CHA development sites, day camps, parks, community and faith-based organizations. Individuals interested in learning about locations and times of participating in their 2008 Summer Nutrition Program sites and times, may call 311 or visit the Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services. Organizations interested in becoming a Summer Nutrition Program site can apply through the Department of Children and Youth Services or in person at the King Center location, 4314 S. Cottage Grove. The program will provide meals now through August 28, at more than 105 locations around the city. The program supplements the school meal service which provides economically disadvantaged youth with free or price-reduced meals during the school year. Current partners in the program include the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Nutrition Services, the Illinois State Board of Education, the Chicago Housing Authority, Chicago Public Schools, the Chicago Park District, Food Service Professionals and the Illinois Hunger Coalition. |
