On June 14, Mary was a featured speaker at the Community Media Summit, a national conference
sponsored by the Community Media Workshop, where Mary serves as a board member. Mary moderated
a panel entitled "Community News," which featured reporters from the Lawndale News and Radio
ARTE from the largely Latino Pilsen neighborhood discussing the specific media needs of
low-income communities. The panelists discussed methods how to work with community based
outlets to get their voices heard. The next day, Mary sat on a panel entitled "Immigrant
and Ethnic Issues in Community Media" with Sandy Close, the executive director of New America
Media. This discussion focused on the positive and negative aspects of reaching low-income
people through the Internet via services such as Myspace and Youtube.
