| Mary C. Johns currently works as Deputy Executive Director for
We The People Media and the Editor-in-Chief for Residents' Journal. Mary began her journalism
career while living on welfare in a public housing rise building that has since been demolished.
She landed her first nine-to-five job as Assistant Editor of Residents' Journal in early 1998
after developing her journalism skills. In the summer of 2000, Mary became the first public
housing resident to serve as Editor-in-Chief of Residents' Journal. Today, she manages more
than 30 low-income freelance writers, photographers, consultants and circulation assistants
while managing part of the youth program. Mary is an national-award winning journalist and one of Residents'
Journal's chief writers and photographers who also oversees production of each issue of the paper.
She has made numerous public appearances in the media, at conferences and at universities to
discuss the changing nature of Chicago's public housing communities.
